Vagueness is that unsettling space where something feels unclear, incomplete, or out of focus.
It can show up in small ways, like not knowing when a houseguest will arrive, or in deeper questions about direction, purpose, or the meaning behind events and situations. When details are missing, the mind can quickly fill the gaps with doubt, imagined scenarios, or unnecessary worry, giving rise to stress and frustration.
Yet there is another way to meet uncertainty.
We can pause and remind ourselves, “The timing is what it is.” Why argue internally with what has not yet unfolded? When more facts arrive, clarity often follows. Until then, we can focus on the positive in the situation, remain present with what is, rather than becoming consumed by what might be.
Acceptance does not mean giving up or becoming passive. It means relaxing the need to force immediate answers. We can choose calm instead of resistance, trusting that things will unfold in their own time and order.
In those moments, we can reconnect with something deeper within ourselves, a steadiness that is not dependent on having every answer right away. Positive thoughts, trust in our inner wisdom, and focusing on what uplifts rather than unsettles us can begin to dissolve the fog and restore a sense of inner balance.
As composer Charles Ives wrote, “Vagueness is at times an indication of nearness to a perfect truth.” By embracing a degree of vagueness, upheaval, or complication, he believed a person could move closer to a deeper and more authentic truth. Sometimes uncertainty is not simply confusion or a lack of information, but an opportunity for reflection, transition, and growth while greater clarity is still emerging.
A few practical reminders when vagueness arises:
- Be patient with ourselves, others, and the situation.
- Gather the facts we can and focus on what is within our control.
- Return to our inner centre through simple grounding activities: a walk, gardening, music, quiet reflection, inspirational reading, or another creative expression that brings calm and clarity.
